Christmas on the Prairie

Holiday fun

Each year after Thanksgiving and before Christmas, the museum hosts "Christmas on the Prairie" for area schools.  This free holiday program takes place in the Blue Beaver one-room schoolhouse on the museum grounds.  Please be aware, this is a high demand, small venue, limited-time program.  All available slots will fill quickly.

What will the kiddos do?  Most of the activities are related to holiday celebrations in the late-19th and early 20th centuries.  So, Christmas a l-o-n-g time ago.  We'll do that for about an hour, and then spend the rest of the time exploring other buildings on the grounds, as well as the main gallery of the museum.

Okay, now a few points to remember:

  • For 2024, Christmas on the Prairie takes place from December 3-20, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (no Mondays or weekends).

  • You can reserve a morning session from 10:00-12:00, or an afternoon session from 1:30-3:30.

  • You must have at least 10 students, but no more than 30 people - including non-students - altogether.  The schoolhouse will only accomodate 30 or fewer people at a time.

  • The program is age-appropriate for 1st through 6th grade students.  Younger or older children are welcome to visit the main exhibit gallery with their teachers, parents, or adult chaperones during the program.  Only the students participating in Christmas on the Prairie - and their teachers, parents, or adult chaperones - are allowed inside the schoolhouse during the program.
